Geo-targeted results are made relevant to users of search engines. In this way, they can deliver better results for the searchers and local business benefits in this way too. Can imagine that you are looking for "italian restaurant" using Google and (if without get-targeting), they show you italian restaurants from Italy.

Enters the new competitor :D

Anyway, the geo-targetting results Google is providing is in fact based upon the location of the data centers nearest to the user conducting the query.

For example, if I was to search for "Something" from Singapore, I MIGHT get a different result from someone searching for "Something" as well from maybe US. It is said that some data centers catch on to indexing slower than others, and there are other factors that play in to the reason for the difference in search results in 2 countries on Google.com.

I lost the images that showed this but I'll be sure to list it should I find it again. Anyway, happy SEO-ing. ;)

Those 160 of so pages targeting "malaysia seo" did not make it to top 10 of "seo" at google.com.my because they do not know how.

It is way more difficult to rank for the keyword "seo" as there are at least 5,800,000 competing Web pages.

As for google.com.sg, you are #10 for "seo". My blog shihengcheong.com is #6.

We don't use ccTLD and both of our web hosts are in the USA.

In fact none of the top 10 Web pages for "seo" at google.com.sg is .SG domain. So no need to spend more money to register a .SG domain if you know how to position your Web page in the right google.ccTLD.

As I said in my earlier comment above, there are many more other factors - some more important than others.

Go to google.com.my and search for 'seo' - none of them are in the results.

Go to google.com.sg and search for 'seo' - people like myself in the top 10.

FYI, larrylim.net is not a ccTLD and the website's hosted in the U.S.

Hi Larry,

Are we getting different search results at www.google.com.my?

That noisy malaysiaseo.com is #1 for "malaysia seo". In fact, all the top 10 results have "malaysia seo" or "malaysia" and "seo" in the title tag.

There are about 160 pages vying for the keyphrase "malaysia seo" and 106 for "seo malysia" - not exactly a very competitive search phrase yet. Definitely less competitive than "singapore seo" or "seo singapore".

The algorithm is not just content-based but also takes into consideration the ccTLD, location of the Web host, registrant's resident country and off-page factors base on the characteristic of the backlinks plus privy information from Google Analytics, Google Adwords and etc. So it is not that easy to cheat Google!

However, the geo-targeting algorithm is not perfect. I could see Thailand SEO company appearing in google.com.my for the search term: seo

I'm not sure because your theory doesn't seem apply to google.com.my, i.e. you don't see sites optimized for 'malaysia seo' in the results.

FYI, my browser is set to use google.com and not google.com.my.

I know that you'll need a ccTLD or be hosted locally to appear in the local search results, but I'm unsure what criteria Google is using for this 'intermediate' results - links, CTR by IP, etc?

I don't believe it's content-based because it'll be so easy to cheat. ;)

Hi Larry,

Thank you for stopping by.

Yes, I saw the same. You are #7 for "seo consultant" at google.com

Google has been geo-targeting the search results for some time now.

Since you are positioning larrylim.net for "singapore seo", your site has to appear in google.com.sg result, right? Google is very smart!

Anyway, you are listed #1 for "seo singapore" and "singapore seo" at google.com too.

For those who are not aware of geo-targeting, I've written a couple of posts this topic:
- Google is Serving Localized Search Results Listing"
- Top 10 SEO Google Search Engine Results
at my other SEO Blog - TIMMGuru.com.

Since you live in Malaysia, your default Google search will serve results from google.com.my unless you force your browser to use google.com (predominantly USA related search results) or the specific google.ccTLD

Alternatively, you can also use the gl variable in the search query e.g.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=seo&gl=sg

Maybe I will make a short post in this blog about Google serving different results for different countries.

Thanks for the vote. The website was optimized for 'singapore seo' by the way. :)

What's strange about your findings is that I'm showing up in the search results of google.com.sg and not on google.com, meaning Google has three types of results now - .com, .com.sg and .com.sg (Singapore pages)?

FYI, I'm also showing up as #7 for 'seo consultant' on google.com from where I'm checking. Do you see the same?
